Can PRP Relieve My Shoulder Pain?

If you're suffering from persistent shoulder pain, you know all too well how debilitating it can be. Not only does it cause significant discomfort, but it can also limit your range of motion and hinder your ability to perform daily tasks.

While it may be tempting to ignore the discomfort, hoping it might go away on its own, one should bear in mind that neglecting the cause of shoulder pain can lead to chronic conditions that may require invasive treatments in the future.

Fortunately, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are considered to be a promising non-invasive solution for alleviating shoulder pain and promoting healing.

The Science Behind PRP

PRP is an innovative treatment that taps into the innate healing capabilities of your own body. The key lies in your blood's platelets, which serve two crucial functions: clotting blood to prevent excessive bleeding and initiating the healing process in injured tissues.

Platelets are rich in growth factors, which are specialized proteins that interact with cells in damaged tissues to trigger a cascade of healing activities. These growth factors help to :

  • Encourage the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) to improve circulation and nutrient delivery

  • Repair damaged nerves

  • Regulate inflammation

  • Stimulate the growth of new, healthy cells to replace damaged ones

  • Reduce the risk of infection by fighting off bacteria and other pathogens

  • Recruit and attract stem cells to the injured area

Stem cells are particularly unique due to their ability to regenerate new cells, and aid in the repair and replacement of damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, collagen, bones, and blood vessels.

By attracting stem cells to the site of injury, PRP injections can accelerate the healing process and promote more complete and full tissue regeneration.

The Procedure of Getting a PRP Injection

The PRP treatment process is quite simple: it begins by taking a small sample of your blood, which is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from other blood components.

This concentration of platelets and plasma is what gives PRP its potent healing properties.

After the PRP is prepared, we then precisely inject it into the damaged tissues in your shoulder joint. This targeted approach not only accelerates healing in the surrounding area, but also reduces pain and inflammation, providing you with a much needed pain relief.

What Shoulder Conditions Can Benefit from PRP Injections?

Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff is a complex group of four muscles and their corresponding tendons that attach your upper arm bone (humerus) to your shoulder blade. These structures work in harmony to stabilize your arm in the shoulder joint and enable a wide range of motion. However, due to the frequent use of your arms, the rotator cuff is particularly susceptible to injuries from sports, overuse, or even simple everyday activities. When a rotator cuff injury occurs, it often causes significant pain and inflammation in the tendons. PRP injections have been proven to be particularly effective in reducing tendon inflammation (tendonitis) and accelerating healing in torn tendons. By promoting faster healing, PRP minimizes the risk of scar tissue formation and long-term complications, helping you regain strength and mobility more quickly.

Biceps Tendonitis

Biceps tendonitis develops when the tendon connecting your biceps muscle to your shoulder becomes inflamed. While this condition can result from an acute injury, it is more commonly associated with age-related tissue degeneration. Biceps tendonitis often accompanies other shoulder problems, such as arthritis, labral tears, and chronic shoulder instability. PRP injections offer the same healing benefits for biceps tendonitis as they do for rotator cuff injuries, reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair.

Shoulder Labral Tears

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket, serving as an attachment point for several ligaments and tendons, including the biceps tendon. Labral tears can occur due to traumatic injuries, such as falling or receiving a direct blow to the shoulder. PRP injections can significantly speed up and improve the healing process and reduce pain associated with labral tears, just as they do for rotator cuff and biceps tendon injuries.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, otherwise known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually, worsening over time and then resolving within one to three years. PRP injections can shorten the recovery period and improve the function of the shoulder joint, offering relief from the chronic pain and immobility associated with this condition and promoting the healing of the joint capsule.
