Elbow Pain

Many people frequently report experiencing elbow pain, which is a common orthopedic issue. This pain can be due to overuse injuries or underlying conditions that restrict arm movements and cause discomfort. Dr. Errachid Mohamed Badr will assist you with advanced treatment options for your elbow conditions to alleviate your pain and get relief from the symptoms.

The joint of the elbow is composed of three bones: the humerus, radius, and ulna, which are coated with articular cartilage. This allows for easy and smooth movement between the three bones with minimal friction.

You may be struggling with an elbow condition or injury if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Weakness or discomfort along the tendons and muscles on the outside of your elbow

  • Instability of the elbow

  • Pain experienced in the elbow joint

  • Swelling, which can also involve the swelling of your tendons

  • Sensations of pins-and-needles

  • Shoulder discomfort in conjunction with elbow pain

  • Wrist discomfort along with elbow pain

Common Elbow Conditions

Treatment of the various injuries and conditions concerning the elbow joint are part of our extensive expertise. Some of the common conditions of the elbow are:

  • Elbow arthritis

  • Biceps or triceps tendon tear

  • Tennis elbow and Golfer’s elbow

  • Radial, ulnar and median nerve compression

  • Flexor tendinitis

  • Elbow trauma: dislocations and fractures.

It is important to note that without proper treatment, these injuries may get more complicated over time, resulting in chronic pain.

If you experience any discomfort such as pain, swelling, discoloration, numbness or tingling sensation, or notice any abnormal positioning of your elbow that lasts for more than two or three days, it is advisable to seek an assessment from Dr. Errachid to pinpoint the exact cause of pain and get treatment as early as possible.

Causes of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain may result from issues within the joint's structure, often caused by tendon injuries like tendonitis. Sports activities such as playing tennis or jobs involving frequent arm movement can also lead to elbow discomfort. Injuries and accidents sustained by the elbow, as well as arthritis, also contribute to elbow pain.

Diagnosis Process and Treatments

Dr. Errachid is has acquired a large expertise in treating all elbow-related injuries and conditions affecting the elbow joints.

Upon visiting his medical office, he will conduct a thorough examination of your elbow joint, have a close look at your symptoms and follow up with any necessary imaging test to pinpoint the cause of your elbow pain and discomfort.

Then, after the diagnosis, he will create a personalized treatment plan to help you get relief and regain the mobility and strength of your elbow.

Conservative treatments of elbow pain include:

Surgical approaches

If conservative treatments fail to deliver the desired results and alleviate the pain, then surgical intervention might be needed.

In this case, Dr. Errachid may assess you as a candidate for surgery.

Frequently performed elbow surgical procedures consist of:

  • Elbow Arthroscopy: Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which tiny incisions are made through the elbow to insert a small camera to visualize, diagnose and treat various elbow related ailments such as arthritis, tennis elbow, stiffness, elbow fractures, and loose bodies in the joint. It can significantly ease symptoms and improve joint mobility.

  • UCL Reconstruction: This procedure involves replacing a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) inside the elbow with a tendon from another area of the body, such as the forearm, hamstring, or big toe. UCL tears are caused by repeated stress to the ligaments, which leads to elbow pain or a loose and an unstable elbow. This procedure aims to improve the elbow's stability and range of motion, allowing the patients to go back to their normal daily activities.

  • Tennis Elbow Release: This surgery alleviates tennis elbow symptoms by taking out damaged tendon tissue and reattaching healthy tissue.

  • Ulnar Nerve Transposition: Performed to move the ulnar nerve to prevent compression, which can cause pain and tingling sensation.

  • Elbow Debridement: Removes foreign bodies like loose bodies from the elbow joint that cause painful restricted motion.

  • Elbow Arthroplasty: In severe cases, a partial or whole elbow replacement may be necessary to alleviate inflammation, pain, and instability caused by rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or complex fractures. During this procedure, the elbow is replaced with an artificial joint composed of two implants that adhere to the arm's bones. A metal and plastic hinge are used to connect the implants together.
