Shoulder pain and injuries are common issues that can significantly impact your quality of life, limiting your ability to perform simple daily activities. Although the shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body, it is also prone to an array of injuries and conditions.

The shoulder joint comprises 3 main bones: scapula, humerus, and clavicle. It is made up of two main joints; acromioclavicular joint, where the collarbone and acromion of a shoulder blade meet, and glenohumeral joint which is a ball socket that connects upper arm bone with a socket inside the shoulder blade.

If you have any of these conditions, you may be struggling with a shoulder condition or injury:

  • Shoulder joint pain

  • Pain in your biceps

  • Rigidity or pain in or around the shoulder joint

  • Elbow pain in addition to shoulder pain

  • Shoulder instability

  • Pain or discomfort when trying to rotate your shoulder joint

Causes of Shoulder Pain

The shoulder problems are commonly caused by accidents or traumatic events. Yet athletes participating in high overhead activities like football, baseball, volleyball and tennis have higher chances of suffering from shoulder injuries. Other causes include overuse and age-related wear and tear.

Diagnosing and Treating Shoulder Injuries and Conditions

Dr. Errachid will start the process of diagnosis by having a closer look at your symptoms, and conduct any necessary x-rays or other imaging tests for a thorough assessment, alongside checking your medical history, to pinpoint the exact source of pain and discomfort. After the diagnosis, the decision will be made to either prescribe conservative treatments, which are usually the first line of treatments, or opt for surgical procedures.

Conservative treatments include:

Surgical treatments

If conservative treatments don’t alleviate your shoulder issues, Dr. Errachid may assess if you’re suitable for shoulder arthroscopy. This minimally invasive procedure allows the repair of various shoulder damages, with minimal surgical impact.

Types of surgeries performed during a shoulder arthroscopy include:

  • SLAP Repair: For tears in the cartilage ring of the shoulder joint.

  • Bankart Repair: Tightening and reattaching ruptured ligaments and labral tears.

  • Labral Repair: Addressing tears in the shoulder’s cartilage ring.

  • Biceps Tenodesis: Reattaching the bicep tendon to prevent shoulder pain.

Should arthroscopic surgery not completely resolve your shoulder joint issues or relieve the associated symptoms, or if your condition is severe enough to necessitate more extensive intervention, then Dr. Errachid might consider you for open shoulder surgery.

Open shoulder surgeries include:

  • Rotator Cuff Repairs: Reattaching torn tendons to the bone to restore shoulder function.

  • Shoulder Dislocation Repair: Treating recurrent shoulder dislocations by repairing or tightening the ligaments.

  • Frozen Shoulder Repair: Releasing and stretching the stiffened joint capsule to restore range of motion.

  • AC Joint Repair: Treating injuries to the acromioclavicular joint at the top of the shoulder.

  • Impingement Surgery: Relieving shoulder impingement syndrome caused by compressed rotator cuff tendons.

  • Shoulder Replacement: Replacing damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components, typically reserved for severely damaged shoulder joint.

  • A: If your shoulder pain is severe, persists for more than a few days, or is accompanied by significant weakness, numbness, or tingling in your arm or hand, it's crucial to consult with your orthopedic doctor. Shoulder pain accompanied by a limited range of motion, instability, or a visible deformity may indicate a more serious condition, such as a rotator cuff tear or dislocation. In such cases, seek medical attention from your traumatologist promptly.

  • A: Recovery from shoulder arthroscopy can vary, but generally, patients return to normal activities within 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.

  • A: It's best to avoid exercises that involve overhead motions or put direct stress on your shoulder joint, such as overhead presses, chest flies, or pull-ups.

  • A: Gentle massage can help reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation in the affected area. However, if your shoulder pain is caused by an injury or inflammation, massage may worsen the problem. Consult with your orthopedic doctor first before trying massage therapy for shoulder pain.

  • A: Yes, sleeping on your side with your arm underneath your pillow or in an awkward position can put extra stress on your shoulder joint. Try sleeping on your back or on the opposite side, and consider using a supportive pillow to keep your shoulder in a neutral position.

  • A: The healing time for shoulder pain varies depending on the underlying cause and severity. Minor strains or inflammation may improve within a few weeks with conservative treatments, while more severe injuries or chronic conditions may take several months to heal.
